Imagine that, my tax dollars from a proposed tax, going to help boost the profits of “Private Broadcasters” and already funded “Public Broadcasting”. This proposed tax is nothing but "Corporate Welfare". My contempt for the C.R.T.C. and this current Federal Government is growing by the day. The C.R.T.C. is not defending the average Canadian but bending to the will of these greedy Private Broadcasters. How dare they try to steal more money out of my pockets like this. This is supposed to be a free market economy. If these Private Broadcasters can't make it on their own, then it's time to do what every other free market company in Canada has to do in these hard times and that is down size their companies or close their darn doors. Folks, if this tax is allowed to go through, it will set a precedent for future corporate businesses in Canada. Don't rule out the newspaper industry lobbying the federal government next to tax your internet to give them "Corporate Welfare" also. If you think that can't happen, just look at what is already happening in Canada with TV. If there is so much as one dollar extra put on my monthly TV bill to give these greedy broadcasters "Corporate Welfare", I'm going to cancel my Cable subscription and I'll go 100% "Black Market" for my TV viewing. I will never again in my life, pay another dime for Canadian TV. I have had enough of this insanity.
  • etn
As if we don't pay enough for packages of channels that we don't even watch all of them, now they want us to pay moe with taxes. This is crazy. It's already hard enough to make ends meet in the world today, we don't need another tax. Stop this craziness today!
  • Once again Canadians are being taxed, income tax, property tax, GST, PST, HST!!! Now we are going to be taxed on TV programming. We already pay tax on our monthly bills!! If I am to be taxed on my analog cable that is already overpriced I will cancel my subscription. Can I propose a tax for Canadians to bail out my family!!
  • P555555
  • I've seen the latest BLITZ that CTV has put on regarding their 'save local tv' campaign and I had to rant. Let’s start here: the campaign is not to save local tv it is to save the 6 o’clock news. It’s really the only thing of any consequence actually produced locally by CTV.
So in the misleading campaign of greed launched by CTV they like to say that the evil empire of cable and satellite are charging you and not paying them. They are very careful in the ads (running ad nauseum) to point out that you pay cable bills… yes I do… and they don’t get paid… true.
You are NOT however paying for local tv nor should you. They certainly imply you are but that is NOT factored into your bill and it should not be because that tv is there, hanging in the air for free. If you took the time to unhook cable each time you wanted local tv, it would be there… waiting… for free.
There is no crisis in local tv, at least not a new one. There has not been real local programming produced for a long time. That void is thankfully and delightfully filled by cable tv.
They make local news because local news makes money and after that they pick up syndicated – mostly American – programming for the remainder of the prime time schedule. They then FORCE your cable and satellite companies to cut to THEIR feed when American shows are ran on the ‘local’ channel the same time as a U.S. channel. Because the U.S. networks are becoming more and more aware of the effectiveness of running over the top of the hour for carry over and promos the automatic nature of the switch your provider is forced to carry out is often done poorly, causing part of the show to be missed. If these people want to save local programming I think they first have to produce some local programming to save. This is a cash grab – plain and simple and it will be passed down to the consumer and they do not care as long as the cheque clears.
I don’t see a groundswell of grassroots to save local radio or newspapers BOTH of which have always had a substantially better grasp of what ‘local’ means. So yeah, contact the Heritage Minister and your local MP and tell them: you pay enough for the over regulated tv industry already. There will always be local news because it MAKES MONEY. As for seeing CSI Whatever, we’ll watch it on CBS.

    ps
If these geniuses didn't overpay BIGTIME for the Olympics maybe there wouldn't be quite the cash shortfall there is now...
  • brittaunt
This is stupid, because not only are the average and higher waged citizens are getting charged for something completely unnecessary but lower waged people who have to work multiple jobs and still struggle to pay off their current bills, they look forward to take what little time they have for themselves and relax in front of the television.
To take away something so simple, yet at the same time so valuable for selfish reasons is just so evil!
  • bcosco
I’m tired of bailouts, I work 50 hours a week and my wife works 40. We lost our retirement savings because of this global financial problem and now I'm going to lose my job. My mother in-law is only 61 and dyeing; and we are having a very hard time with the cost of medical care. We may have to sell hour home to help pay the bills, and given I may not have a job I can't qualify for a new mortgage. Bare in mind that we do get some assistance from the government that is the federal level; the provincial government has clawed back many services to pay for the dept they created for the OLYMPICS. We pay our bills, we don't cheat on our taxes, we don't waste water or food and help other when possible and yet NO ONE OFFERS US A BAILOUT!!!!!!!!!!
  • maxooog
  • shagnew13
I think this is pure non-sense, with the economy the way it is, and the struggle that some people have been enduring for the past year or two, it is ridiculuous that they now want to charge us for TV. Where was this supposed TV tax 10 years ago?, what is it for anyways? Like they would give us a straight answer. Until I see more jobs being created, the economy picking back up, and when the Government starts helping out the people, that is when you can come to me and ask for my $10 bucks. Until that happens you can forget about it.

I also find it quite funny that now all the airwaves have been switched over to digital signals the Companies have come looking for this new $10 tax, I mean it was free for the past what 50 years? Get out there and advertise more, gain more revenue. It's not our fault your ads, or marketing promotions aren't working, make them better or put better people in charge that will make more for you.

I will not support this tax, if it does happen, I will be cancelling my subscription as soon as it goes through. There is no need for it, never has been, never will be.

How about those companies pay me the money they are trying to collect for watching the garbage they put on TV sometimes.
  • I will cancel my cable subscription If this happens i paid already enough money to watch TV
  • Assez!
  • brantford
I'll cancel my cable if they are going to make me pay more. Why should I pay more just so Global and everyone esle can "show" me great AMERICAN made shows like Family Guy, House, Glee, The Simpsons, Survivor, The Office, Leno, The Tonight Show, Hells Kitchen, The Amazing Race, NFL Football (only need Canadian TV Mondays since we don't get ESPN in Canada) and so on.
Want to charge more make it a pay channel. Then people who want it can pay for it. I know I wouldn't because I have NO need for Canadian TV. Have plenty of options to get news, Internet, The Radio, or a Newspaper.

I have always and will always have my TV on the American station. Yeah I get the Canadian TV station logo and ads, but It's not really on the Canadian station, and the second they stop putting their feed over the American station it goes back to the real feed.
  • mohabamomma
Please . I am a senior and cannot afford any more tax. I am taxed enough and my little pension stays the same . I don't see an increase in it . I will just have to stop watching my favourite shows and that is all my entertainment . So I am asking that you please give a senior a break .
    Thankyou
  • RobbingHood
It won't stop at $10.00 a month I assure you just look at history. Giving them the power to implement a new tax will only set a precedence which I am hoping all Canadians will not agree to. As consumers we pay too much taxes already. A good idea for the major networks effected is to get more creative, come up with better solutions to there challenges and not just lazily pass the buck to there customers. I too will surely cut my bill down or cancel altogether and use the internet for my entertainment needs if this tax goes through.
Rest assured they are making a ton of money and now is surely not the time to be asking Canadians for more.
  • goodfood65
I am tired of opening up my bill only to see that the rates are going up again.I am going to cancel my cable if this tax goes through. At the same time I may as well cancel my cell phone and internet as well. There are many companies who will be happy to provide these services for me.
  • johnkillin
We have to stand up as Canadians and stop being so passive.I think this is just another cash grab.I totally disagree with the TV tax
  • R0bert63
Both the UK and France have had a TV tax for years. It was implemented early on when TV sets became readily available to users. This tax is imposed for each TV set in the home. Because of this tax, state-owned channels have no, or very few, commercials. Would either of the big providers entertain this idea? Or are they simply trying to improve their gains in addition to the money that they get from commercials? In Canada, no tax has ever been imposed and then removed, nor reduced. Why would this one be different? Where do I sign to STOP-THE-TV-TAX?
  • Every body is feeling the recession, people being laying off there jobs, hours being cut, employment insurance is not paying enough and these television company are trying to take more out of us; where should we get the money from to pay for tv tax? Here is an advise to them: CEO should take a pay cut, reduce others top ranks pay, reduce on traveling and expensive meeting.

Why are they so greedy I do not understand why they need to tax us now, can they give us the logic behind there demand or request?
  • unhappycamper
Maybe the cable and satellite companies should be breaking down their monthly bills so the subscribers realize what they are actually paying for. The cable and satellite companies should also refuse payment to the CRTC as these companies as a whole have some sway in this decision.
  • We already pay copious amounts of money to have television in our homes, not to mention other means of reimbursement to television stations to keep their services. Is it really necessary to tax those of us who willingly dish out money every month to have a television signal in our homes. My husband and I have been together for 11 years and up until 2008 we did not have paid television within our home. If this tax is implemented I can guarantee that we will remove our television signal from our home and go back to our old form of entertainment. Even if it means our daughter will go without television on demand and we only have a few fuzzy channels, our movies will be in good use again and not to mention the health benefits that will come with it as we leave the couch behind.
  • getluckyspader
This tax is just another way to rip the ordinary every day working people off. We already pay enough for the use of cable or satellite. I think that the cable ant satelite people should make CTV, Global and CBS another package that people should have the choice of having. As it stands now we get them and have to pay for any other channels that we would like to watch.

Myself I rarely watch any of Global, CTV or CBS stations. There is nothing much to watch on them, except maybe the local news ( which I can get else where if need be.) If they were put together in a package I am sure they would be in bigger trouble than they are now. I am so sick and tired of time you turn around with the cable or satellite that there is another increase in our bills for one reason or another. What happenend to living up to the contract we have to sign with some of the satellite company's on what we have to pay during the length of the contract. Putting another tax on would be in violation of the signed contract.

Myself I have had it and if they force another tax on us my satllite will be gone. In this day with so much loss of jobs and having to tighten our belts in order to servive we just cannot afford another tax.

  • stephgat
2. Avoir un contenu canadien de 50%.
    http://www.crtc.gc.ca/fra/info_sht/tv13.htm

  • yelsel
We do not want this tax!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • I used to work for telecommunications company and I know how awful the prices are for television services. I know how much advertising is shown on each channel and companies are paying big money for these. The telecommunication companies are saving money by using digital signals so they can send much more information on fewer lines, so that makes this tv tax even more rediculous!!! I will give up TV before I put out one more penny. Or better yet, I will watch it online where I only have to pay for my internet, which I currently get through my cable provider!! By moving to a DSL provider I will end up saving myself around $80 per month. I will leave you with one more thought, even if one household removes television service that means $600/yr per customer with basic digital cable and then if everyone is forced to downgrade their cable package that will decrease profit even more. The one that will lose the most is the cable company!!!
  • jiminhamilton
It is time that the CRTC stopped catering to the interests of big business, and gave proper consideration to the impacts of increasing the costs of programming to all Canadians. Adding a Tax or compensation scheme to the already high costs of receiving television signals is becoming prohibitive. There are so many Canadians that are unable to afford the cost of basic television services and you propose to take even more from them at a time that we are all negatively impacted by the recent economic crisis. I ask that you consider carefully the impact of implementing the aforementioned tax as many will consider or more likely be forced to cancel their cable or satellite services in response to this unfair and unjust tax to benefit the networks. What real justification do they offer that will convince the rank and file consumers that there is benefit to our country or ourselves, what assurances are the networks giving to ensure that they will put the monies garnered into local programming and improved services. They retain the right to seek out and sell advertising spots that seem to be in ever increasing lots of time yet come to the consumer and demand a tax that would be on top of any revenues already got through said advertising. They want more money from us and I say we want and expect more from the networks and cable companies to justify the increased costs to us. Enough is enough! This is just having their cake and eating it too and we the consumer are being asked to pay for it, on top of all else, why we will probably have to pay tax on that too, when will it stop!!
  • bgiunta60
I feel like this is a bail out and it isn't fair to pass the buck. There is a recession and we are all cutting back so CTV and CBC cut back. We are tired of cutting back on stuff it is your turn deal with it.
  • corkyatyyz
Unfortunately it will be the Satellite and cable companies that bear the brunt of any new taxes. I for one will probably cancel my satellite service.

Enough is enough. I can find something else to do other than watch over taxed TV!
  • Sheri1969
You add $10 to my bill and I will cut TV altogether. No satallite TV from any company, no analog TV, nothing. I'll just cancel it and spend more time to productive things like READING, crocheting for the homeless, enjoying my time with friends, playing with my cat, praying, playing piano, getting out more. So ya, go ahead...add your stupid tax, but be guaranteed I'll drop TV service altogether and I KNOW the rest of my immediate family will too. And that is just one family in Ontario. Nice Try, but you won't get me to buy!!!!!!
  • Here is a much better idea Ms Tax Man....Sure tax TV, you already tax Newspapers. Instead why don't your tax everything; include children's toys, condoms/birth control. Then give a smaller Tax to more essentials because you need a certain portion to be guaranteed to flow into your collection. Finally you be the smartest tax man and issues each Canadian citizen over the age of 19 half a million dollars. Call it something like the rescession bonus. Let them have this money to spend. A majority would pay off their debt, including mortgages’, car loans, back taxes, credit cards. Then they may even spend some on Leisure items, like big screen TVs. Along the entire time, you continue to collect all those taxes. It’s a win win win solution. What do you think?
  • sveltkamp
As a student, I understand the need for money. However, being a student, I have a limited amount of funds every month. Because of this, I can't be forking over piles and piles of cash every month for the various bills that I have to pay. Increasing the amount of money that I would subsequently be forced to pay for cable each month would probably result in cancellation. My question is this: Would the "big-wigs" of the cable companies settle for people continuing to pay the charges that are being enforced now or would they rather have to deal with a multitude of people canceling their cable?
  • Laganas
I will be canceling mine! We pay too much for tv already !!!
  • virginiadifrancesco
This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard of. You can turn on your tv when ever you like and all you hear about is job loss and house forclosures etc..and now they what to charge us more for local television! This is complete bs and my family and I will do without cable before I will pay anymore money to these companies...Living day to day is hard enough without these bs taxes being implemented.
  • I think we already pay a lot of taxes for every service we get right now. Why should we make TV and Radio broadcasters even more richest than they already are now. If the amount if my monthly bill increases I surely will cancel my cable subscription right away... It is not fair to us as customers to pay for bad goberment polices on that mater. We have to stop these nonsense as many times as they show up...
  • druide

  • Don't mess with us, you are the ones who ought to pay...... it's a Tax for you, not for us, don't make us pay yours bills!!
Cable offers the same bad movies, documentaries and programs since the last five years, and to get the few chanels we want, we are conditionned by cable companies to buy a bunch of chanels we don't want.
Just like we pay to get your signal, you have to pay to get your signal from the public networks. Stop abusing.
  • djmaynard
can't believe the absolute propaganda that was sent to me by Bell directing me to this site about a "TV Tax." This new, so called, tax is not new money, its just a redistribution of the ridiculous amount of money that is already passed around to pay for TV programming. Bell (and Rogers, and the like) are just using this as an excuse to raise fees. Just because a portion of the current pool of dollars would now go to local stations, its an easy excuse to raise feels.

Bell will use this excuse, and the gov't will allow this, and we will continue to get second rate internet and satellite tv.
  • Tiberiusduck
Look, I have zero love for the Cable and Satellite companies as I know these greedy companies are also ripping me off to no end but ultimately any fee / tax is going to be passed on to me, the consumer and I refuse to pay anymore then what I am already being gouged. I'm fighting back this time and I'm refusing to pay "Corporate Welfare" to these "Private Broadcasters".
  • johnowen
no more taxes we as canadians do not agree to more taxes we have way too many now .
  • braker
In this day and age with the Economy as bad as it is, my family cannot even afford the basic things. We are working out of food banks and I have lost my full time job due to a Layoff. The job market is so very bad in Oshawa that I have sent out hundred's of Resumes with absolutely NO relief in site. I have had to sell personal items to simply pay my Rent and and do not have money for food, bills etc. So adding more taxes to me is downright unfair to the people that are struggling to get by on a daily basis. My cable bill is high enough and I cannot afford one more penny to be paid out. Why has nobody thought of all the people that have been hit so hard with the loss of jobs recently?? To think that as families, the TV companies do not care about the extra strain they are putting on us is simply downright selfish. Do we have to go without TV, simply to survive these days. Like the commercials say, some people can not afford hydro and rent or food, so we have to pick one of these to pay....That is MY situation with a child and I am completely devestated that companies making billions of dollars are not thinking of the families that have absolutely NOTHING to live on................ I have always believed that there are people and companies that care about fellow Canadians and the suffering that we have to go through on a daily basis simply to survive. Now my beliefs are gone as I find this to be completely disgusting on the Companies part to even consider adding more strain to Canadian Families. The Government is just as bad as the companies in this situation. What ever happened to Compassion in this Country???? I am totally in shock that with all the Job Losses, Food Banks closing, people hurting themselves because they are so out of their minds with worry, the fact that this has been ALL over the papers for a long time, for a TV company to be thinking of making it even harder for us to survive is TOTALLY SINFUL..!!!!!!!!
  • johnowen
I strongley dissagree with this so called tv tax we as canadians pay plenty of tax already we do not and will not agree to another tax grab.
  • denisesurette
I think this is completely ridiculous. Why do these multi-billion dollars service companies need clients to pay more so that they pay local stations? They don't even pay for those signals! And now they want consumers to pay more on their bill? Are they even aware that they are already paying for these local stations?
  • surfr
Enough Already!!! We have to stop this NOW!! They keep hiking up the prices and we have to pay? They think of their pockets ONLY! HEY Big Dogs What about alot of these families out there that don't have it so great can barely afford to put food on their tables let alone basic cable? and also education wise it is nessessary to have as I know my children have come home and needed to watch the news and do a paper on something they seen on it that night! I for one DO NOT WANT this new Tax!! We pay enough ALREADY for what we get.
  • narrowrule
When people have little spendable cash and prices of food and other necessities continue to raise weekly, why should we have to pay for something that has never been taxed before? I will tell you why.....for many of us our TV's have become our only entertainment, and we can always depend on some establishment to make it even harder to live 'the good life' and tax us or raise the price. Heck, with the blended tax about to hit us where it hurts, why not tax us further. Then we can all go on the dole. Kick them when they are down, CRTC. Get stuffed, I say!!!!!!!!
  • Cadroy
In a time when most Canadians are in a financially weakened position, good paying jobs are harder and harder to find, the future uncertain, China talking about one world currency and the IMF gaining more and more momentum…. Isn’t it funny how do-nothing executives and bureaucrats spend most of their time coming up with creative fees and taxes to pay for nonexistent programs, redundant services and all this to bolster their privet agendas. These unsustainable practices have to come to a stop and now is as good a time as any… Anyone with me?
  • martin318
  • This whole thing is a disgusting display of who can get the most out of our pockets... I don't believe the networks, nor the Cable-Satellite providers... I think the only thing that will save the customer.. is a full takeover of all broadcasting by innovative and customer loving internet services.. on demand, no one forcing us to have channels we don't want and robbing us at every turn. No more breaks for any of them... they don't care about the customers... but we're not the lemmings they think we are..
  • this is robbery the cable and sat. companies are being paid all ready why we as tax payers and customers to one or the other should half to foot the bill for them i think if we all cancelled our subscriptions they would think twice .the crtc needs to put a stop to this right away
  • I think it's about time that Corporations started to look elsewhere to save money, besides our pockets, yet again. Maybe a cut in salary would be a start. I am getting tired of supporting the "un-needy" and "un-deserving". No wonder we all want to live the American dream, cause we can't afford the Canadian one anymore.
  • agualtieri
If my bill increases by one more dollar, I will cancel all services. This will result in my spending more time on more
    important tasks.
  • This lovely website and their super informative commercials are the biggest joke of all. If you take notice, the sponsers of these commercials and the "stopthetvtax" website, are none other than our overly concerned cable providers. A wonderful cover for yet another mysterious charge on already ridiculous charges. It is truly much better to point the finger at our local TV networks. Neither the CRTC or our local stations want to charge us as individuals this tax, it wants to pass this tax to our cable providers. It is the cable provider who will pass this tax onto us, the consumer, as they just can't possibly handle the cost themselves. Whatever would happen to these multibillion dollar companies if they could not pass this fee onto us. We all know with the smoking good deals they offer us, this tax could seriously put them all out of business. Lets all look at the source of the information and ask ourselves, when is the last time any one of these companies really gave a hoot about its subscribers? Why now?
  • je ne veux pas
  • It looks like CRTC is bailing out CTV or CBC which is not at all aceptable. We have enough bailout. If the management of CTV or CBC failed to sell enough advertising for surviving then they should shut down the business or hand over to the proper authority who can run it without hacking the neck of general public who are already suffering a lot with the down turn. If the tax is imposed tahn I believe TV subscribers will cancell their contract drastically. So send this mail to CRTC to Stop the TV TAX. Ramiz Kazi/
  • This tax is so rediculous. I've been hit with taxes & users fees enough. This is unnecessary and Not Fair!!!! Stop the tax NOW...
  • velodf
  • mamui65
This is ridiculous, I can't believe they think we'll fall for this. You probably think I'm talking about the television networks but I'm actually talking about the cable/satellite providers. They keep calling it a tax, yet they've spent money on a flashy website and television ads - isn't that the same thing. All this sounds like a made-up controversy. I keep hearing about how networks are doing this just to maintain their profit margins, but isn't that exactly what providers are doing now? They don't want to subsidize such a tax in other ways because they don't want to dip into their own profit margins. Frankly, I'm tired of hearing about this.

How many abuses do we have to endure from multinational corporations before population reacts and stand up? React, that is by urging our governments to better protect the citizen's and consumer's interests.

The CRTC is there to protect Canadian culture and provide proper access to information for all Canadians. They may not always make the best decisions, but overall they have really helped Canadians in these respects. There is no "tax", this is just a name for a fee. And this fee will help support a system that, while it is failing, is crucial for Canadians to be informed and have access to important elements of their culture. The statement "If the local guys cannot sell enough advertising then should not be in business!", is an example of free market in action. But free market doesnt always mean the best system. Health care and education are government run are good examples of what need to be regulated and supported through alternative means (though they too certainly arent perfect).

the following link - http://www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/info_sht/tv13.htm - explains that cable and satellite providers are making such large profits, that they are very capable of absorbing the costs necessary to keep Canadian culture alive, and to keep us informed of the things happening around us.

Maybe they should try living within their means like we all have to do. Maybe if local TV can't stand on its own, there is no need for it. Maybe they should stop whining and do something constructive. Maybe they should pick their own pockets through restructuring. Maybe they should improve program offering.

I'm fed up with paying more taxes because of irresponsible management. Governments are at the top of the heap for the misuse of excessive taxing by buying votes with our own money. When governments don't set a good example what can one expect from others?
  • patrice8
Sorry but on principal,I will cancel the service!!

So here we go again, first OPEC put there hands in our pockets in the name of war times and natural disasters (though still generated record financial gains for their shareholders). Then the Big Three joined the party and claimed that business couldn't continue as we know it without a government bailout...translate (can we have more from your pocket even though we screwed up). It would seem that corporate North America has reached a critical stage in the way businesses are run. So now we have a another bullet to face TV taxes, maybe we should start insisting these corporate entities begin running their businesses like a business and not a country club. When a country club needs more money they simply raise their membership fees, the difference here is we're not members so much as we are victims (again). I'm so tired of the lack of accountability in the corporate world, they always have a hundred reasons for increasing user fees but never face the real problem. Maybe your system doesn't work, just ask GM but don't ask upper management as a laborer. Here's a though don't take our money to fix your problems, restructure and fix your own.
  • No one is giving me extra money for the things I need. And the same thing should happen to them. I will cancel my cable bill if this proposed law comes into affect. Enough is enough. I will not pay for something I am already paying for.
  • You won't have to pay for it again if the cable companies wouldn't pass the buck along to their customers. They make $2 billion a year in profits, yet feel the need to keep increasing our bills annually for fees incurred on them by the government. Fees that are part of the cost of doing business.
  • not saying i disagree with the tax, nor do i agree with it. however being a sat subscriber i do not consider local programming as free. Sat and Cable companies make us pay for the portion of local stations that offer over the air broadcasting. If i have to pay to watch local programming on sat or cable, why shouldnt they pay local carriers?

S.V.P. LAISSEZ NOUS RESPIRER EN PAIX ET AVOIR LA TRANQUILITÉ D'ESPRIT POUR NOTRE AVENIR.

    I DON"T HAVE LOCAL PROGRAMMING !
And if I did I don't think CBC or CTV would pay to have local programming in my area.
There are over ten towns around my area and NONE of them have Local Programming, why should our little towns pay for the BIG city's local news and other sheet.
Capitolism does seem to make only a handful of people richer. I bet CRTC chairman Konrad von Finckenstein is being offered money under the table to support this TV Tax.

This is just another tax grab, for the irresponsible companies in our community. Where does it stop!! Doing a bit of research a weather man on Canadian TV can make several hundred thousand dollars a year. Besides the ridiculous pay, they are hardly ever accurate! Nice job if you can find it! If this tax goes through I will be canceling my satellite subscription. Unfortunately my provider will also suffer financially if everyone does this. Maybe they can come up with another tax to help support the providers of TV. If the weather man can make that kind of money, I would hate to think what some of the other people at TV companies make. I don't know about you, but I don't make anything close to what they make. I probably work three times harder, 4 times longer. I guess having some of those jobs must feel like winning the lottery on a regular basis. Atleast in my opinion.

Maybe the TV companies should look from within, and become fiscally responsible much like the rest of the private sector companies in our country. Some of us have had to take pay reductions, loss of benefits, and sadly loss of jobs all together. I think it is time we all stand up and let these big corporations know how we feel about the level of income they pay their employees and then ask us for financial help. After all has your company received alot of free money lately?? I don't think so.
  • boxy69

  • whittac
Just another scam that we the tax payers have no say in. When is it enough? Jobs are in short supply people are struggling and they want more? From where? I'd rather disconnect my tv and read. In fact, maybe its time we got off our backsides and realized there's really nothing on tv anyway and started going out again, reading, exercising etc. Enough is enough. If this tax goes through I'm out and so is my family.
  • pedrovno

How much tax is going to take, before they notice we are not living anymore. We pay for personal taxes, get, pst, tax this tax that. This country is getting carried away on taxes. Do the people of this country have to bail every company out. We are not living just working to pay every tom dick and harry. Is this fair I think not!!!!

  • This is ridiculous, i'll cancel my cable before giving these companies another penny. It is absolutely another money grab!
  • DRUMCHAPEL
CABLE AND OTHER FORMS OF TV ARE EXPENSIVE ENOUGH, MORE TAXES, MORE PROFIT FOR THE BIG COMPANIES.
IT'S TIME TO TAKE A STAND AND STOP MORE TV COSTS!
  • jhoro
I find this ridiculous stance from Rogers and company. Why was I charged till now by Rogers local HD channels and why is Rogers encrypting them if they are "free"?

To make a software analogy - I resell a piece of software that is available on the internet for free, but when the author of the software comes and asks for a cut I start screaming - "stop the tax"!

The grab was from the cable/satellite companies who always charged for the free channels and now when the companies actually [providing the content come and ask for a cut complain.
  • jungdoreen
TV Tax! Ridiculous!! Enough is enough. They are just money hungry and we pay the price, but what else is new! STOP THE TAX NOW! If everyone were to cancel their subscripton where would they be! I will cancel mine and go somewhere else.

Years ago our family stopped subscribing to cable entertainment service at the end of a school year. This was done just to see how the summer would go and if the family would find more productive things to do. Amazingly the whole family did find fun, entertaining and valuable indoor and outdoor activities. It was almost eight years before we thought about shelling out the money for a cable or satellite service. Even after all those years nobody in our family seemed to miss the service, but we thought we would get setup again. Yes, the service has been good, some interesting programming, however, there really is no tangible benefit to having the service again. It is only entertainment plain and simple.

This ten dollar increase no matter how it is spun by either side is still money coming out of our pocket for entertainment which is already in my opinion is overpriced. And quite frankly if it ten dollars this year, you can bet that there will be an increase next year because of some innocuous reason. If this increase or addition to the cost of the service goes through it will be a very simple decision, the service will be turned off. The money we currently spend on this service will just be redirected into other family activities. The entertainment service we currently are subscribed to does not increase quality of life or help my garden grow.

Yes, we may only be one family that will take this approach. You will not directly miss the money I spend and it will not affect your bottom line. At least when the children leave home, they also will not have a need to subscribe to an entertainment service such as cable of satellite. I take comfort in the fact that our lives do not have to rotate around the “boob tube” and that we can and still do participate in many other gratifying and fulfilling activities. A rainy day on the golf course is better than a rainy day planted in front of the television.

Local Canadian content is also not a drawing card for us to migrate to the television. If we turn down the service, it will mean we will not be watching Canadian content either. Somehow the television companies, cable and satellite providers seem to be under the delusion that life will stop if we do not watch television and they seem to think the service they provide in whatever flavour is a necessity.

Good luck to both sides in your ten dollar battle, I hope you can sort this out without affecting my pocketbook because I will sort it out by disconnecting.
  • Tell Global & CTV to cut down on their news readers for a start. Why do they need two people to read the news???
If they are doing that in every station across the country then cut back to one and save your money.
Most of the shows they carry are American imported crap. No, No, No to giving them any more of my senior pension.
CRTC think of the every day people not the rich broadcasters who are forever crying poor.
  • Yet again it is a case of abuse of power. The rich get rich and the poor get even less than what they had before. They already get enough money to support themselves anyway. In my books $400,000,000 a year is more than enough to support themselves.I wonder who is governing their spending habits. I guess the CRTC has no interest in being 100% accountable to those they serve. Instead they would like to undermine and decieve the general public who pays their bills in order to operate such a service. Yet another shining example of greed, mistrust, abuse and deception. This proposed tax should Not be implemented at all.
  • Already has......Got my Rogers bill there it is. I wonder what it is that I pay$103.00/month for????? I thought it was for a package of channels that included local channels. Come on people we need to stand up for ourselves. Say NO..... What's next tax on American channels that I already pay for as well??????
  • michael41
Just to be clear...the new fee on your cable bill in not the "TV Tax" that is being discussed now. That is the LPIF fee. (Local Programming Improvement Fund) That was passed by the CRTC and is available to any broadcaster who wants to make local programming. The "TV Tax" is an additional fee that broadcasters want in order to keep their channels on the air. One is for programming (LPIF) and is already being charged to every cable and satellite subscriber...the other has not been earmarked for anything specific and would be given to the broadcasters to do with what they want (for example, give to shareholders as share prices fall)

If they put the taxe, we should all canadians unsubscribe to the tv either Videotron, satellite, Rogers etc. And if we all unsubscribe they won't have any choice to reduce the prices to live.
  • We wouldn't pay the price if the telco's didn't pass the cost along to us all the time.
