Stop deceiving the public by calling this a "TAX". It is no more a tax than the monthly hidden "digital service fee" I pay to my current cable provider. This kind of fee is non governmental and not a tax. It is a license fee that is the result of distribution of broadcaster signals that cable might choose to pass on to subscribers. I can accept that explanation but not the intentional distancing by the cable companies to somehow suggest that they have nothing to do with it appearing on my bill.

Broadcasters should absolutely be mandated to produce more local programming than they currently are. 100% agree that Rogers produces more local programming than my local CTV affiliate - mind you, their programming is often produced by volunteers. I appreciate the local Rogers programming.

I think the reason they will not guarantee that this new money will actually safe local television is because they already have government funds they dip into for local programming...but they are not using it. I think they believe that the only way we will watch is to continue buying American programming. If they said this new tax would go to local only, they would not be able to afford the American programming that they believe keeps viewers coming to them.
